Bus Locations

The Bus Locations dataset provides detailed information on the location of public buses. This dataset is maintained by the Land Transport Authority.

General Guidelines​

  • Bus Locations are marked every 30s or upon door close typically, although some system variability is to be expected. Before 20th April 2021, Bus Locations are marked twice per stop. From 20th April 2021 onwards, Bus locations are marked at a higher frequency.
  • Locations marked are as provided by the system; all location are corrected and map-matched to the corresponding bus routes by a set of algorithms within the system. This is done to ensure consistency and fairness in applying them to transport operator KPIs measurement.
  • Bus IDs are not hashed as they are non-sensitive in nature and not critically sensitive to bus operations. Usage caveat here applies in that these should not be used as alternative PTO metrics for the purposes of KPI measurement, as these rely on the integrated bus systems internal algorithms.
  • Dataset is uploaded daily every T+5 days to ensure best possible completeness of the dataset due to system limitations including maintenance downtimes or occasional operational outages.
  • Due to technical issues, some Bus Locations records are not able to be regenerated for resend. The file dates are 27th Nov 2020, 1st Dec 2020, 2nd Feb 2021, 3rd Feb 2021, 4th Feb 2021 and 7th Feb 2021. These files can contains trips up to T-7 days.
  • Due to time offset issues, some Bus Locations records might be after the extraction date or more than 5 days before the extraction date. Such records will be ommited. The post-processed data is treated as complete where the % of records removed does not exceed 0.001% (1000 rows per 100m records)
  • From 28th Jan 2023 onwards, the following bus records are removed:
    • Records without matching trips data
    • Records with distance travelled less than 15metres
    • Records with identical dataTime, lat-lon and speed

Fields​

This segment covers a short description and domain-specific information of each field.

Latitude, Longitude​

For the following datafields, certain rows may contain invalid values (i.e. Latitude is outside +-90 and/or Longitude is outside +-180).

Trusted Center for Sensor Data casts these invalid coordinates to 0 at query time to faciliate geospatial operations on the dataset.

Trip ID​

There is a possibility for a bus to re-logon to a previous trip ID, resulting in 2 different trips having the same trip ID.

When a bus is not logged on to a trip (used for non official trips), records will be mapped to the previous trip ID, resulting in a trip being extended past its final stop.

All trips, whether incorrectly logon or false logon will generate an ID as part of logs. Incorrectly logon or false log on trips will not have current stop, next stop, destination stop and service number.
