Speed Band

The Speed Band dataset contains information on traffic speeds on expressways and arterial roads, expressed in speed bands. It is managed by LTA and is publicly available through DataMall. Historical data for speed band is not onboarded on Trusted Center for Sensor Data (TCS) yet.

Dataset Update Frequency

DatasetUpdate Frequency
Speed bandEvery 5 minutes

The speed band dataset is updated every 5 minutes on LTA's DataMall and the latest speed band information will be available on TCS within 1 - 3 minutes after.

Fields

This segment covers a short description and domain-specific information of each field.

The unique identifier for a stretch of road.

Example: 103000000

Road Name

Road name where road stretch/segment is located.

Example: KENT ROAD

Road Category

The category of the road segment/stretch. This field classifies the type of road (e.g., Expressway, Major Arterial, etc.) and is defined in the DataMall documentation as such:

  • A – Expressways
  • B – Major Arterial Roads
  • C – Arterial Roads
  • D – Minor Arterial Roads
  • E – Small Roads
  • F – Slip Roads
  • G – No category info available

Example: E

Speed Band

Traffic speed expressed in speed bands. Each speed band corresponds to a range of speeds and there are 8 bands in total, defined as such:

  • 1 – indicates speed range from 0 < 9
  • 2 – indicates speed range from 10 < 19
  • 3 – indicates speed range from 20 < 29
  • 4 – indicates speed range from 30 < 39
  • 5 – indicates speed range from 40 < 49
  • 6 – indicates speed range from 50 < 59
  • 7 – indicates speed range from 60 < 69
  • 8 – speed range from 70 or more

Example: 3

Minimum Speed

The minimum speed recorded within the speed band, defined in km/h.

Example: 20

Maximum Speed

The maximum speed recorded within the speed band, defined in km/h.

Example: 29

Start Lon

Longitude map coordinates for start point for this stretch of road.

Example: 103.85298052044503

Start Lat

Latitude map coordinates for start point for this stretch of road.

Example: 1.3170142376560023

End Lon

Longitude map coordinates for end point for this stretch of road.

Example: 103.85259882242372

End Lat

Latitude map coordinates for start point for this stretch of road.

Example: 1.3166840028663076

Date

Date when speed band was recorded.

Example: 18/4/2023

Time

Time when speed band was recorded.

Example: 20:03:00

FAQ

Does the dataset include private roads?

  • No, the dataset only contains information about public roads.

How are the speed bands determined?

  • The speed bands are derived from the recorded speeds and categorized into predefined ranges. The specific thresholds for each band are available in the dataset's documentation.

What is the significance of StartLon, StartLat, EndLon, and EndLat?

  • These fields mark the start and end points of each road link (i.e. stretch of road).

Any differences from DataMall's API?

  • All values are shown as described in DataMall API, except Date and Time which have been derived from lastUpdatedTime while Latitude and Longitude values are not padded with trailing zeroes (eg. 103.85 is shown instead of 103.85000000000000.
